R: I can fucking guarantee you that Arthur's marriage would have never happened/not survived without Merlin there to fucking drive it.
Because Arthur is really fucking needy and if Merlin wasn't there to run interference every single time Arthur wanted to throw a tanrum, Gwen would have tossed him on his backside.
Mara: Gwen is really easy going by choice and yeah, i think if she had to deal with Arthur as he TRULY IS, she would come to hate his ass
she doesnt actually have to see him all that much, and when he does see her, he transforms into his "lovely, courteous" self
then when they wake up in the morning, she goes off and does her thing, and Merlin has to come in and wake him up.
R: **hold face**
Merlin really IS the only one who sees Arthur as he truly is. ;<
And still loves him. LOVES him.
Mara: Arthur could fail at everything and Merlin would still love him so, so much.
I don't think the same is true for anyone else. Gwen didn't start really loving Arthur until he started defying his father in little ways
When he showed that he could be a vehicle for a better life for everyone in Camelot
which, you know, IS a good reason to start to love someone.... but it's not about Arthur, not really.
it's about what he can _do_ for her, and for the people.
For Merlin it's never even about whether or not Arthur will stop the 30 year persecution of /magic users/, a community which he is apart of. It's about if Arthur is safe. If Arthur is happy. If Arthur as a man will still love him.
R: In a small way I sort of wish that they didn't make it such a point to show Arthur continuing to put on a show for Gwen even after they married. It really downplays the strength of their marriage. As much as I enjoy that Merthur is so fucking intense, I just... I just feel like that is a first-level fanficcer mistake.
The Dark Tower was a dramatic attempt to prove that they were really in love. But it was badly executed in the face of all the little ways they treat each other.
If there was even one person on that writing team that thought anything of the marriage itself, they would have taken notice of the fact that Arthur's relationship with Merlin was already the emotional equivalent of MT EVEREST.
That Merlin knew all the ugly little things about him and was still willing to murder people and continue to subject himself to persecution all in the name of a love that he wasn't even allowed to have. That's a ALOT to stand against.
Arthur and Gwen's pretty little picinic-side marriage is so weak beside it.
Mara: Poor Gwen, man.
